About the Artist

Penny Roberson is a native Hoosier, born in Indianapolis and raised in Evansville. She attended Indiana University in Bloomington as a Fine Arts Major from 1960 to 1963, then finished her BFA from Bradley University in 1969 with a degree in painting and printmaking. She was a freelance and commercial artist until 1985 when she decided to go back to school for her Master's degree in art education from Herron School of Art at IUPUI. After that she began teaching in the Washington Township School District at the middle-school level where she worked as the art teacher for two years, traveling between both Westlane and Eastwood Middle Schools. In 1989 Penny became the art educator at Greenbriar Elementary School where she still teaches today. When she's not teaching, Penny lives and paints in her studio in Westfield, IN with her husband and four cats.

Artist's Statement

My painting informs my teaching and my teaching influences my painting, but I paint because it's fun and I like to discover more about the visual world. Painting helps me know what is inside of me. Painting disciplines me to listen to my own inner thoughts and ideas. I try to paint what I think and what I feel. And in my teaching I encourage my students to find order and security in their own ideas and images. A quality art program helps students listen, organize, and grow in confidence.
